1. Nigeria is currently made up of 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory and a total of 774 Local Government Areas. 

2. Each local government area in Nigeria is administered by a Local Government Council.

3. The head of a local government is the chairman who is the Chief Executive of the local government area. 

4. Other elected members elected who are under the chairman is referred to as Councillors.
5. Each of the areas under the councillors is further subdivided into wards,with a minimum of ten and a maximum of fifteen for each area.

6. This system of government was designed in such a way that people living in rural areas will feel the impact of the government via the chairman and the local government ruling body.

7. The State government has power to sack the local government chairmen and also conducts the election for the local government through the independent national electoral commission (INEC).

8. The nation’s revenue is shared between the Federal, State and Local Government areas.
