The Independent National Electoral Commission popularly known as (INEC),
has been given the mandate to conduct all electoral affairs and activities in Nigeria.

 INEC was established by the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria to organize elections into various political offices in the country.

  • 1. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)set up in 1998.
  • 2. INEC is the electoral body / commission which was set up to supervise and conduct elections in Nigeria.
  • 3. INEC doesn't have the power to disqualify any candidate that wants to contest,only the court has that power. 
  • 4. Before the creation of INEC,The Federal Electoral Commission (FEDECO) established in 1960 was the commission responsible for conducting post-independence federal and regional elections of 1964 and 1965 in Nigeria. 
  • 5. FEDECO was dissolved after the military coup of 1966.
  • 6. After the dissolution of FEDECO,the Federal Electoral Commission was constituted by the regime of General Olusegun Obasanjo In 1978 to conduct elections in the country. 
  • 7. The military government of General Sani Abacha in December 1995 established the National Electoral Commission of Nigeria which conducted election in the country. 
  • 8. General Abdulsalam Abubakar created the present day INEC In 1998 following the dissolution of NECON,the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was formed.
  • 9. INEC organized it's first elections on May 29, 1999.

  • 10. The function of INEC as stated in Section 15, Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution and Section 2 of the Electoral Act 2010,is listed below: 
Register political parties in accordance with the provisions of the constitution and Act of the National Assembly.

 Organise, undertake and supervise all elections to the offices of the President and Vice-President, the Governor and Deputy Governor of a State, and to the membership of the Senate, the House of Representatives and the House of Assembly of each state of the federation.

 Monitor the organization and operation of the political parties, including their finances, conventions, congresses and party primaries.

 Arrange and conduct the registration of persons qualified to vote and prepare, maintain and revise the register of voters for the purpose of any election under this constitution.

Arrange for the annual examination and auditing of the funds and accounts of political parties, and publish a report on such examination and audit for public information.

Monitor political campaigns and provide rules and regulations which shall govern the political parties.

Conduct voter and civic education.

Promote knowledge of sound democratic election processes.
Conduct any referendum required to be conducted pursuant to the provision of the 1999 Constitution or any other law or Act of the National Assembly.
