APCON also known as the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria was established by the Advertising Practitioners Registration Act No. 55 of 1988 now Advertising Practitioners Registration Act Cap A7 of 2004.
The Act number 55 of 1988 accorded deserved state legislative recognition of advertising as a profession in Nigeria and vested APCON with powers to regulate and control the practice of advertising in Nigeria, in all its aspects and ramifications.

APCON promote responsible and ethical advertising practice, and serves as a watchdog for consumers. APCON also manages the needs and interests of stakeholders in Nigeria's advertising industry by insisting on pre-exposure clearance of all advertisements,and checking of all forms of abuses such as spurious testimonials,misleading statements, visual and verbal exaggerations, misleading offers, suggestion or pictures offensive to public decency Etc---
APCON also registers students,and award degrees,it also facilitates associate & corporate registration.

Q: Functions Of APCON Nigeria?
According to section 1, of Advertising Practitioners Act 55 of 1988 here are the major functions of APCON?
- (a) Determining what standards of knowledge and skill are to be attained by persons seeking to become registered as members of the advertising profession, and reviewing those standards from time to time.
- (b) Determining who are advertising Practitioners.
- (c) Securing in accordance,with the provisions of the decree, the establishment and maintenance of a Register of Practitioners, and the Publication from time to time, of lists of those persons.
- (d) Regulating and controlling the practice of advertising in all its aspects and ramifications.
