How To Make Nigerian Puff Puff

Ingredients
  • 2 cups (250g) of Plain Flour
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ cup granulated sugar 
  • 3 pinches of salt
  • 2 teaspoons of yeast (the one used in baking bread)
  • Lukewarm water (for mixing)
  • Vegetable Oil (for frying)

Directions On How To Make The Nigerian Puff Puff
  • (a) Simply put your flour in a bowl, add the ground nutmeg, powdered yeast, sugar and salt. Mix all these together.
  • (b) Then add water in trickles,and keep on mixing until you have easily blended everything together.
  • (c) Add the yeast you mixed with lukewarm water,use the warm water to mix the puff puff ingredients if you want it to rise faster.
  • (d) Keep on mixing till the batter is smooth,make sure you do not add too much water,the batter should not be watery.
  • (e) Go ahead and cover the bowl with aluminum foil and make sure it is airtight by pressing the edges of the bowl.

  • (f) Leave it to rise for about 45 - 50 minutes. When it's ready to fry, the puff puff batter should have risen in quantity and will have some air bubbles.
  • (g) Pour some oil in a deep pot and allow to heat up.The oil level should rise to at least 3 inches. This will ensure that the puff puff will become spherical when scooped into the oil. 
  • (h) When the oil is hot enough,scoop some batter into the oil ,you can test to know if the oil is hot enough by putting a drop of batter into the oil. If it sizzles and comes up to the surface of the oil, then the oil is hot enough,if however the batter goes down to the bottom of the oil and stay there,then the oil is not yet ready.
  • (i) Put in more scoops of the batter,make sure you avoid over crowding.
  • (j) Make sure that your observant,once the underside of the puff puff has turned golden brown, flip the ball so that the topside will be fried as well.
  • (k) Once the  both sides are golden brown, take out the puff puff balls and place in a sieve in other to reduce the amount of oil in the puff puff,afterwards you can transfer to your sieve towels.
This is basically how a Nigerian puff puff is made,you can serve your puff puff with cold soft drinks.
