The University was formerly called the Obafemi Awolowo University and Ondo State University.

 In November 2007 the school was named Adekunle Ajasin University in honor of the late Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin that once headed the school during it's inception days.

 The history of AAUA started back in 1982, after the university relocated,on 5 November 1999,it started a new history.
